General rules
Gov.ie says a person must be under pension age, satisfy PRSI conditions and be certified as unfit for work by a doctor. Medical evidence is normally provided through a Certificate of Incapacity for Work.

What this means in real life
In practical terms, Illness Benefit can replace part of an employee's income during a certified period when illness prevents work. It does not normally match the person's full wage, and it is separate from any statutory or contractual sick pay provided by an employer. The payment depends on PRSI contributions as well as medical certification, so having a doctor's certificate alone does not establish entitlement. On a household budget, the change may mean moving from normal net wages to a lower social insurance payment for the relevant period. Illness Benefit is generally associated with shorter-term incapacity, while Invalidity Pension and Disability Allowance have different contribution, duration and means-test rules.
