Main rule
Disability Allowance is a means-tested payment. Income from work can affect the payment rate, but work does not automatically mean a person loses Disability Allowance.
The Department of Social Protection assesses income and eligibility under the official rules.

Simplified example
A person receiving Disability Allowance has weekly earnings from part-time work. The Department applies the earnings disregard rules and then assesses the remaining income with any other means. This is a simplified example only and not a payment calculator.
What this means in real life
For someone receiving Disability Allowance, starting paid work does not automatically mean the payment ends on the first day. Instead, earnings are considered under the payment's disregard and means-test rules. In practice, part of weekly earnings may be ignored, another portion may be partly assessed and earnings above the relevant level may be fully assessed. The resulting payment can therefore reduce gradually rather than stop immediately, but the outcome depends on gross earnings, allowable deductions and other household means. Self-employment income can also require a separate assessment of business income and expenses. The main Disability Allowance guide explains the wider eligibility rules. Only the Department's assessment can establish the payment after work begins or earnings change.
